I should use this more often.

Because nobody looks at it. But perhaps, at the right moments, I can convince myself that somebody does. And that somebody will hear me when I share my opinions that shouldn’t really be shared.

It really sucks to be so passionate about justice, all the while not actually being a very nice person. How was I blessed with such a combination of traits? I would LOVE to know.

So, my latest favorite life lessons from the classrooms of Georgetown College are race-related. Now, let’s keep in mind that I am from Ashland, KY, where my graduating class was probably 98% white kids. So, an expert on anything race relations-related, I am not.

But I’ve been reading. And LET ME TELL YOU, the black-white relationship (I’m focusing on “black” here because that’s what my latest studies are exploring; more on other races as the semester goes on) is not as pretty as people make it out to be.

And I hate that.

I always thought racism was pretty much dead, minus the cluster of ignorant dorks in my hometown with Mossy Oak bumper stickers and Confederate Flag t-shirts. But hell, racism is sooooo much more than those people can even conceive of.

The structure of society. Our institutions. Our language. Our cultural norms. Our preconceived notions.
All centered on the white man (and yes, I mean “man” here in the proper, gender exclusive sense, not in the poorly worded “females included, obvs” kind of way).

And there are a lot of really nice people who aren’t even aware of this.

So I’m going to keep learning, with the help of such fine people as Spike Lee.

Geez. I’m a dork.
